Concerns regarding the current school bond referendum

Lower cost solutions were dismissed in favor of this high cost solution

This proposal represents a high cost solution for Millburn homeowners and will ultimately serve to hurt the property values of the homes in our community. Other less expensive options do exist but were dismissed in favor of the most costly proposal. We will be paying this bond referendum off over 20 years, in addtion to the interest on the school system's already existing $40 million of debt.

The middle school will become increasingly large and impersonal

At a time when there is a national movement afoot to shrink the size of middle schools, Millburn will be creating the largest middle school in the history of our town. There are options to reconfigure our grades to reduce the size and impersonal nature of the middle school. This could be done at a lower cost while at the same time providing a better more nurturing environment for our children.

Students' education and safety at the middle school could be compromised over the next several years

The massive building and renovation proposed for all sides of the building will negatively impact the learning evironment and potential safety of our children while the construction is in process.

While the school system definitely needs a solution, there is no back up plan in the event that voters fail to pass the referendum in December

If the referendum does fail in December, the Board of Education will have to scramble for back-up solutions to solve issues that clearly need to be addressed today. This would put our children into a hastily devised and less ideal educational envrionment.
