Voting

To vote in our town, state or national elections, you need to be a registered voter. Here is all you need to know.

You are eligible to vote if you are:

  • A United States citizen
  • Will be 18 years old by the next election
  • A resident of the County for 30 days prior to the election

You are not eligible to register to vote if you are serving a sentence or on parole or probation, as a result of a conviction of an indictable offense under state or federal law or have been adjudged mentally incompetent.

Voter registration forms are available at:

  • Town Hall
  • State agencies including public libraries and the DMV

First time registrations require either your driver's license number or the last four digits of your social security number for verification of your identity. Other accepted forms of identification are listed on the registration form.

If no identification is submitted with your registration, you will be required to provide identification at the polls. Even without identification, you can use a provisional ballot but your vote will not be counted unless one of the required documents has been supplied to the County within the close of business on the second day after the election.

Because original signatures are required for voter registration, forms should be mailed or delivered to:

  • Essex County Superintendent of Elections
    33 Washington Street
    Newark, NJ 07102

Voter registration forms can also be used for name and address changes.

Voter registration deadline is 29 days prior to the election.

Party Affiliation:

New Jersey's voter registration form does not include a political party designation. You can declare a party affiliation at the polls the first time you vote in a primary, or you can file a Political Party Affiliation Declaration Form fifty days before an election to indicate a party affiliation or change a previous party affiliation declaration.

To download a copy of this form, click here.

The form requires an original signature. The mailing address for your declaration is supplied with the form. It is not necessary to declare an affiliation, but you will not be able to vote in primaries without indicating an affiliation.

Absentee Ballots:

Submit an absentee ballot if you are unable to vote at the polls on Election Day.

Absentee Ballot Applications are available at Town Hall or click here.

The application must be received 7 days prior to the election. A voter may also apply in person to the County Clerk until 3:00 p.m. on the day before the election.

Send the completed application to:

  • Essex County Clerk
    P.O. Box 690
    Newark, NJ 07101-0690

Absentee Ballot Procedures for the permanently and totally disabled Voters who are permanently or totally disabled may request that their names be placed on the permanent absentee voting list for all future elections. Check the appropriate box on the absentee ballot application stating that you are requesting this application because you are disabled.

Where to vote:

By the Wednesday prior to the election, a sample ballot will be mailed to all registered voters providing the location of the voter's polling place. If you do not receive a sample ballot, you may contact the Town Clerk's Office for assistance.

Voter assistance at the polls:

Assistance is available for voters with disabilities or an inability to read or write at the polls. Please ask poll workers for assistance.
